Remember the days when marketing consultants told you that you absolutely had to have a website if you were going to keep your business alive? It may not seem like it was that long ago, but those days are long gone (along with some of those marketing consultants!).
The thing is, those folks were right. It’s almost impossible to do business today as a builder or remodeler (or anything else, for that matter) without a presence on the Web. But here’s the kicker: Just having a website isn’t enough.
The numbers keep changing, but experts estimate that there are approximately 8 BILLION websites residing on the Internet. If your company is just one of those, how in the world will potential customers find you?
The answer of course is that potential homebuyers search for you on the web. The vast majority of them start their search on Google. But once again, just because someone can find you on Google doesn’t mean they will. Think about how you search for things you want on the Internet. You type what you’re looking for into the search box on Google and wait to see what pops up. But how many times do you scroll down to the second or third or fourth page? For most people, the answer is: Never.
It’s the same for people that are looking for a custom homebuilder or remodeler. They’ll check out the companies on the first page—and the higher up on the page, the better the chance that these folks will click for more information.
So how do you get there? Some builders try to buy their way there with pay-per-click strategies. That’s not wrong, but the fact is that pay-per-click only accounts for 25 percent of search results. That means 75 percent of the search results are coming from organic, non-paid searches.
